# Silver Krugerrand: the silver version of the South African coin

Published on **29/07/2026** · By **Sébastien Joumel**

In brief

The Silver Krugerrand, struck by the South African Mint **since 2017**, contains **one ounce (31.1035 g) at a fineness of 999**. Its buyback value follows the fine weight times the day's spot price, plus a market premium.

## A silver version of a famous coin

The Krugerrand is first known as a gold coin. Since **2017**, the South African Mint has also struck a **silver** version: one troy ounce (31.1035 g) at a fineness of **999**, about 31.07 g of fine silver. It reuses the historic designs: Paul Kruger on the obverse, the springbok on the reverse.

It is a relatively recent **bullion** coin on the silver market, sought for its metal and the fame of the Krugerrand name. Like other investment ounces, it is not meant to carry a strong numismatic premium, apart from special editions or early years prized by some collectors.

## Estimating its buyback value

The metal value is calculated as: **31.1035 g × 0.999 × the day's silver price**. The world spot is the same for every buyer; the gap between two offers comes from the professional's margin and the coin premium.

To judge a buyback offer, compare it with the fine weight times the current spot. Our [silver buyback](https://meilleur-rachat-argent.fr/en/silver-buyback/) page lets you put professionals in competition. The method is the same as for the [Silver Britannia](https://meilleur-rachat-argent.fr/en/guides/silver-britannia-value/), another ounce struck at 999.

## Premium, condition and buyback

The Silver Krugerrand's **premium** depends on demand, packaging and condition. As its distribution is more recent, the premium can vary by region and period. A coin in its original capsule or tube, uncleaned, is generally better valued than a scratched one.

At buyback, the professional authenticates the coin (weight, dimensions), identifies the year, then applies its schedule. Payment is made by bank transfer or cheque above cash limits, with ID and register entry. Do not confuse the silver version with the gold Krugerrand, whose value rests on an entirely different metal.
